Peteの歌詞は、特にWHOの曲は、たいした内容がないものが多い。ラリって作ったようなものが。名作とされているNEXTがあまり好きでないのも、歌詞のせいである。
さてbabaのなかの有名な dont't raise your eye であるが、これはどういう意味なんだろうか？ raiseというのは raise your handとかで使う、「あげる」という意味だから、私は「目をあげる」という意味だとずっと思っていた。普通、「泣くなよ」ときたら「顔をあげなよ」と来ると思う。それなのに、Raise your eyeではなく、Don't raise your eyeなのである。
ただ、raise your eye という表現自体が、あまり使われないのではないだろうか。
肉体的な目のことをいうときは、open your eyesのように所有代名詞＋複数形で使うが、単数で使う場合は視点とか観点という抽象的な意味になるのかな？keep an eye とか catch your eye とか。
目をグリンと上に向けるとなんか、「もうだめだ、参った」みたいな感じもするけどそういう意味なのかとも思う。
