このアルバムは傑作とされていて、最高傑作とする声も多いです。
私も傑作とは思いますが、最高傑作には絶対に選ばないですね。
ただ、ブートレッグシリーズという、３枚組みのＣＤが発売されて、そこにこのアルバムの発売直前に差し替えられたという別テイクの曲がいくつか入っていたのですがそれがすばらしく、もし差し替えられていなかったら最高傑作になっていたかもしれません。
Idiot Windの別テイクもありました。聴いてない方はぜひ聴いてください。
さて、この Idiot Windという曲ですが、あらためて歌詞を読んでみると不可解な詩です。
まず、"Idiot Wind" という言い方を、この曲以外に聴いたことがありません。
でも、ディランは女に対して冷たく突っぱねるような曲をよく書いています。
It Ain't Me, Babe
I don't Believe in You
Like a Rolling Stone
など。
Idiot Windも、この手の曲か、と聴いていたのですが、それにしても、
"Idiot wind, blowing every time you move your mouth"
"Idot wind, blowing every time you move your teeth"
というと、私は「口臭」を連想してしまいます。
ディランは、"Idiot Wind"という言葉をどういう時に思いついたのか。
私は女がくだらない事、知性のかけらもないことをしゃべったときに、口臭を嗅いだのではないか？
と思いました。
もちろん、歌詞に「臭い」とは書いていませんが、
mouth, teeth, breath ときて、idiot wind と来たら、これは「口臭」のことだ、と考えるのは至極当然のことではないでしょうか？
